Demetri Martin is important.
He has made a profession out of play.
Martin dropped out of NYU School of Law to write comedy for Conan O’Brien and perform his own sketches on The Daily Show, and he now stars in his own Comedy Central show “Important Things.”
I first saw him on “Flight of the Conchords,” playing one those amusing ’80s keyboard guitar things. And I laughed often and loudly when I watched the premiere of his show. Example: One of his characters is a raver who’s far too early for the party and resorts to running around the city in bizarre man-pigtails, slinging his glow sticks in the afternoon light and jumping around like an idiot. A jester. A Grade-A clown.
This is all he does on the show. He plays, ridiculously, hilariously, fully. He is a grown man acting wonderfully childishly, without an ounce of self-consciousness. He inspires me.
How will you play today?
